The field of secure multiparty computation has its origins in Yao's millionaire problem: The problem discusses two millionaires, who are interested in knowing which of them is richer without revealing their actual wealth.
Abstractly seen, there are two parties (Alice and Bob). Alice knows a secret number x, Bob knows a secret number y, and they want to calculate which of the two numbers is larger. However, Bob should not learn more about x, and Alice should not learn any more about y.
The generalization of this problem is pretty obvious: instead of the 1-bit information, if x < y or x ≥ y, some general function f(x,y) is calculated and more than two parties can participate in the calculation (here the function f must have an appropriate amount of arguments). In this general case, the security requirements are that no party P, even if it behaves malicious, learns anything about the secret inputs of the other parties that cannot be calculated from P's input and the public function results f(x,y, ...).
In literature, there are various techniques and approaches for secure multi-party computations. These are based on different security assumptions, e.g., that the majority of the participating parties honestly keep all the prescribed procedures, or that a public key infrastructure is given in advance.
The work at the IKS in this area is mainly concerned by the question which two-party primitives are complete. This means which minimal building blocks are already sufficient to realize any secure two-party computation. We also investigate how tamper-proof hardware can help realizing secure multi-party computation.
