The European Institute for System Security (EISS) was founded in 1988 by Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Beth and is therefore one of Germany's oldest institutes for information security in the academic field.
EISS' goals are novel solutions that offer security in the becoming more and more complex applications in informatics. In doing so the most important task is the draft of security protocols of abstract descriptions to the point of prototypical realization. Thereby it is necessary to always examine the whole application. Recent and future threats must be identified and formal models and mathematical proofs must support the whole drafting process.
Important results of the work at EISS are for example the first chipcard-based access security to a computer network or one of the first public-key-cryptography-protocols with key management, as well as a very early implementation and usage of a firewall computer. All these techniques are standard procedures nowadays. Recent results are the first formal security models supporting a modular draft and regarding threats like blackmail or protocol abort, the current best draft of a special hardware for breaking the RSA-method as well as handy propositions like the increasing of security in digital signatures with camera phones. The results of EISS are documented by numerous prototypes, books and around 200 publications in magazines and speeches at known conferences.
Since 1988, the EISS stays in contact with over 20 firms. Furthermore the EISS acted as a advisor for the interior ministry of the Land Baden-Württemberg and the german Bundestag.
The vision behind the work at EISS are trustable applications that can be used inoffensive despite the increasing number of threats for modern IT-systems.
